Mobile World Congress 2008

Day 2! Several diamonds in the rough...

Day two of the conference and the hoards have arrived.  Monday and its 40K visitors felt empty by comparison.

Several diamonds in the rough (by rough I mean dozens of consultancies / me-too LBS applications / equipment testing products / traditional telco equipment OEMs / etc), though you really have to put in some miles to find them (both in terms of footsteps and conversations).

A pleasant alternative was the investor / operator "Speed Dating" session that brought the 50 Mobile Innovation finalists to a collection of investors and mobile operators for 5 minute rapid fire discussions.  Not a great deal of time to form a qualified opinion, but certainly enough to learn which CEOs have perfected the art of the elevator pitch - some of which were brilliant.

Generally a great collection of private companies from across the ecosystem.  Peter mentioned all the category winners in his last posting (truly impressive businesses), so here are a few others that also captured some interest.

Mobile Intelligence Solutions:  Music categorization algorithm that aides music discovery...enabling mobile operators to identify and promote great, but unknown bands through their music portals.

Media Net:  Downloadable language translation application that operates on most devices and is an absolute must-have tool before my next trip overseas - at least if I'm destined for a local speaking one of their 25 supported languages.

PixSense:  White label personal media storage / retrival service that automatically captures all mobile media and synchronizes to carrier portals / PCs / social network sites /etc. - effectively leveraging the proliferation of mobile generated content into a new service offering for mobile operators.
