Mobile World Congress 2008

Day 2! Summary: More action from MWC

Posted by Mike Reid on 2008-02-12

Wow!  What a day at MWC. More action than even MWC’s own pet Hollywood star, Robert Redford could handle. Where to start…

Big Companies:

The LBS revolution starts here. Enter the Nokia 6219 Navigator...Yes, another phone with a map on it. But wait, look closer. Hell, this thing turns when I turn, and knows which way I’m pointing! For us at 3i, this is a really neat step in user experience. It may not be the final item, but it shows the way. With an inbuilt GPS, ‘accelerometer’ (say that after a few cold ones) and integrated compass, this will get the heads turning – literally. Check more

Yahoo! – Beating Google to T-Mobile AND hitting the mark with oneConnect. Read more here. A bit down, but not out, it was great to hear Yahoo! kicking Google out of T-Mobile (remember Web’n’Walk?). Yep, Yahoo! are to become T-Mobile’s exclusive web search provider across much of (not sure what that means) Europe. Moconews has more detail.

Nokia And Google In Search Tie-Up
Not to be outdone, Moconews.net tell us that Nokia and Google announced Tuesday that they had struck a deal that would see the search engine integrated with the handset giant’s search application Nokia Search....We prefer Taptu.mobi of course: the best mobile search engine.

It’s not Google’s Android, it’s the Open Mobile Alliance (honest!). Android is taking off the covers at last. BBC had a nice piece.  Not easy to gauge the real impact yet, except it has the whole industry on edge, and is finding lots of friends.

Little Companies:

Sumitomo picks deal with power amp efficiency specialist Nujira (the inefficiency of power amplifiers is a secret that all Mobile Operator Environmental teams want to keep quiet. Do you know how many power stations it takes to keep us all talking? Nope, more than that! )

The Cloud – buying again to expand across Europe (a bit old this news but significant in our view. Whilst MWC talk is all about how 2.5G and now 3G are not good enough, now we should get excited about LTE (ie 4G – can you believe it?!), The Cloud is just getting on with it and giving us free WiFi in places we like to drink coffee. Nice and simple. Fantastic. More here

Sonimunbreakable phone that even your 4 year old cannot crack - Why is no-one addressing such an underserved market? Good on you Sonim.

So that’s it for Day 2.

Finally, take a look at this piece from Gigaom.com. The Mobile OS Scorecard. Who’s winning in the OS handset launches. Linux ahead big time.

More to come...

Wireless or wiremore? You can't miss the Yahoo! stand as you walk in the door of Hall 7. There you’ll see one of the most bizarre things at this mobile conference. Now I thought mobile and WIRELESS were synonymous which makes the 96 different WIRE connectors available for you to download Yahoo! GO onto your handset the wackiest thing at the show. I downloaded Yahoo! GO over the air to my handset, which I thought was the whole point of mobile data. Clearly I was wrong. By the way Yahoo! I think GO is great.
