Mobile World Congress 2008

Day One!

Catch-up time! How the newcomer humiliated the oldtimers.

After only a few hours at MWC, it was clear how iPhone's user interface has got the industry scrambling. Shame Apple isn't even here to gloat! Hall 8 is full of 'also ran's', starting to learn the 'ABC’, of internet talk. Roll on the widgets. Of some of the smaller, more nimble players Picsel Technologies, Opera and Trolltech are rapidly accelerating their 'Apple' releases driven by panicky handset clients.

Does Nokia's acquisition of Trolltech means it doesn't love Symbian anymore?

Or maybe she's a new girl in the wings? According to the guys on the Trolltech stand, Nokia is very interested in being able to develop applications once and serve to any OS. Not surprising, you may say, given their services ambitions, BUT remember that Trolltech are Linux experts at the core. 'I think that was another GPS satnav company you tripped over' The LBS hype is back big time, but this time it feels real, give or take a year. Nice to see some web 2.0 mash-ups. Take a look at Navx.  Watch carefully to see how Nokia and TomTom's acquisitions of NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas muddy the market.

David & Goliath : Google & Taptu

We're biased, but Taptu's new one tap search looks like a winner. Try it here. Steve Ives explains here.

Pioneering location aware search - but this time it's for real.

Great to hear some rumours that Mobile Commerce is putting together a deal where they would append location data to searches on their Orange / Yahoo deal. Mobile Commerce already work between Orange and Yahoo to ensure a comprehensive search service.

Hope you had a good day.

Keep an eye out for additional comments from 3i companies and 3i partners.

We'd love to hear your views!

On the subject of operating systems, Sony Ericsson's anouncement that it will ship mobile phones using the Windows Media operating system must be putting the pressure on Symbian (and maybe Nokia)(see http://www.itpro.co.uk/news/164430/mwc-2008-sony-ericsson-to-launch-windows-mobile-handset.html) -- and that's before we've seen Google's Android...

You're right about Taptu Mike - they just walked away with the Mobile Monday Community Award here in Barca (http://www.taptu.com/blog/2008/02/12/momo-peer-awards-taptu-wins-global-community-award/)

I still have not found anyone other than Taptu who have gone back to first principles in designing their mobile based search. From what I can see most of the others are adaptations of Internet browser based solutions, and just don't get down to business like Taptu. Worthy winner!

Hi it's Bob from Taptu who had the pleasure of receiving the award on behalf of all the Taptu team. We're all delighted as the MoMo Monday community are a ultra mobile-savvy crowd and getting the Peer award as voted by all the global chapters was just great. Thanks to all our supporters and if you haven't tried taptu, just go to taptu.com on your mobile and search and share - didn't you just know I was going to say that :)
